The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
